Artificial intelligence can use Google Street View images and satellites to estimate the energy efficiency of buildings in cities. This can lead to investments to reduce energy waste and fight climate change.
By analyzing the available data, AI can determine whether a building is energy efficient or not. Using this technology, a complete picture of the energy efficiency of buildings in different countries can be obtained.
Kevin Mayer and colleagues at Stanford University in California trained and tested AI on remote sensing and public data from around 40,000 buildings in the UK. This included Google Street View imagery, aerial photography and satellite measurements of building heat loss.
